Bob Bondurant’s Personal GT40P is Now Available

World Champion, Bob Bondurant, received points towards his 1965 World Championship win, taking third place podium position at Daytona in the #72 FORD GT40. Bob said it was “The race that got away…I lost 11 laps to a $3 condenser part, but at least I caught up and came in third overall.” The original #72 FORD GT40 was sold to Greg Miller in 2014 for $7 million at Mecum.

Bob’s wife, Pat, knew of his plight with the GT40, both at Daytona and the devastating decision made by FORD at the 1965 Le Mans race when the heads were all changed the night before the race. Bob qualified third on the grid and was out of the race within hours due to Ford’s decision. Bob knew he could have won anything in that GT40, but there would be no wins for Bob in this car as fate would have it.

Pat searched for months and found her husband an exceptionally crafted right-hand drive ERA GT40, almost identical to the GT40s he raced for Carroll Shelby. Bob rubbed his eyes in disbelief when the transporter dropped this car off in the Bondurant’s driveway on Christmas morning. He was finally reunited with his elusive GT40, and wow, did he have fun tracking this car for the next eight years!

Bob tracked this car at a Shelby reunion on the Fontana Raceway. Still, more significantly, he won his last race in this very car at Pomona Raceway at the age of 79 and frequently tracked the car at his world-famous Bob Bondurant School of High Performance driving track.

Aside from being the personal car to World Champion Bob Bondurant, this car has had its share of royal prominence, including several celebrity passengers like Adam Carolla while he interviewed Bob for his feature in the film “The 24 Hour War.” Christian Bale also had seat time in this car during his training at Bondurant Racing School for the movie “Ford V. Ferrari.”

The car has been featured at Monterey Historics and multiple car shows, always drawing large crowds to watch Bob start the engine and rev the RPMs, much to his and their delight.

When it wasn’t on the track, this car was stabled in the Bondurant Museum daily for visitors to enjoy and brought Bob so much life over the years. The last time he tracked it was in October of 2018, and it has been garaged and maintained until today. It would be Bob’s greatest joy to assure that this unique and one-of-a-kind vehicle is enjoyed by an enthusiast who understands the true significance of this car and the love behind it.
